As someone with an extensive list of food allergies, there are few things I love more than coming across a new exciting superfood that works with my diet restrictions. One of my favorite recent finds is Chyawanprash- a nutritious jam that has actually been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years. Chyawanprash is made from a powerful combination of antioxidant-rich forest fruits and healing herbs to create a delicious jam that is also loaded with nutrients.
Almost any jam you buy from the grocery store is loaded with preservatives and enough sugar to last you for weeks. Instead of giving you a sugar crash, Chyawanprash is so invigorating and energizing that it has long been referred to as “The Elixir of Life.” Chyawanprash is revered for having myriad health benefits, including balancing stomach acids, aiding with digestion and bowel movements, nourishing brain cells, helping the liver purify blood and eliminate toxins, increasing calcium absorption. Chyawanprash is also a potent source of Vitamin C, making it a powerful immune booster.
In addition to the many health benefits of Chyawanprash, it also has positive effects that appeal to your vanity. Chyawanprash can help restore a luminous skin complexion and has been used to increase sexual vitality!
The benefits of Chyawanprash have long been part of Ayurvedic medicine and Indian culture. It is believed that Chyawanprash was discovered by the sage Chyawan in the 4th century. According to the story, Chyawan was a very old sage, but with the use of this potent tonic of Ayurvedic herbs, he regained his youth and vitality. In the main Ayurvedic text, Charaka Samhita, Chyawanprash is regarded as something that “nourishes the weak, the wounded, the old, and those that are of tender years as well." It is also mentioned that after using Chyawanprash, “a person acquires intelligence, memory, comeliness of body… longevity, strength of the senses, great pleasure in the companionship with women, great increase in the strength of the digestive fire, improvement of the complexion, and the restoration of wind to its normal course."
ORGANIC INDIA still uses the original recipe created by the Ayurvedic sages to maximize the potent benefits of this amazing jam! Preparing the jam according to the instructions of the sages is an important aspect of making true Chyawanprash. The main herb used in the recipe is Amla (Amalaki), but the jam includes over 35 herbs, including cardamom, cinnamon, cyperus, and guruchi. The recipe also includes organic cane juice, ghee, and sesame oil- three superfoods that pack even more healthy goodness into this jam. The mix of honey, cane juice, and loads of spices creates a flavor that is simultaneously sweet and spicy.
There are lots of yummy ways to eat more Chyawanprash. Try spreading the jam on gluten-free toast for a healthy way to start the day, or pair with crackers for an afternoon snack. The natural sweetness of Chyawanprash also makes a nice addition to a glass of milk or warm Tulsi Tea.
