Food irradiation is a process that uses radiation to preserve food. Basically, exposure to radiation changes the molecular composition of the target material. In the case of food, this chemical change delays the ripening of fruit and the sprouting of vegetables, while simultaneously destroying bacteria (including the helpful bacteria that these foods naturally use to defend against pathogens).
While the FDA approved it for use over 50 years ago, irradiation produces free radicals in food which can damage vitamins and enzymes. The process also creates new chemicals, whose long-term effects have not been studied.
All ORGANIC INDIA products are USDA certified organic, a standard which prohibits the use of irradiation. Many ORGANIC INDIA products have also earned Demeter Biodynamic Certification, which also prohibits the use of irradiation.
