Andrographis: Respiratory Support

Also known as Indian Echinacea, Andrographis is an herb that has been used in Ayurvedic and Chinese systems for millenia. Known as the “King of Bitters,” this cooling plant soothes and balances the body, mainly due to its primary bioactive compound, Andrographolide. This natural compound is known to modulate immune function and support healthy inflammatory response. Used throughout India, China and Southeast Asia, the ancient plant is a panacea for a range of health issues, promoting lasting wellness and vitality. Modern research only reinforces what traditional doctors have known all this time, and hundreds of medical studies have backed the plant’s benefits.

What sets ORGANIC INDIA Andrographis apart?

ORGANIC INDIA takes every avenue to operate in a way that is Beyond Sustainable, for both the planet and the amazing partners we work with. Our Andrographis is grown, harvested and prepared in adherence to the following principles and practices:

  • Small Family Farmers. Ethical partnerships are the heart and soul of our company. We contract with small, family-owned farms across India and purchase crops at premium market price. Most of our partners have been with us for more than ten years, and each is an integral part of our herbal family. As indispensable members of our team, we provide all of our farmers health insurance and ongoing training by agricultural experts who are at the cutting edge of organic and regenerative farming—a no-brainer for us, but an unfortunately unheard of practice in the industry.
  • Regenerative Agriculture. We are deeply rooted in agriculture that is beyond sustainable—it’s regenerative. What this means is our farming practices not only preserve the land, they make it better. Regenerative means replenished soil, improved biodiversity, enhanced water conservation, and increased carbon sequestration. We look beyond our crop to the whole earth and our responsibility to it as a healthy conscious living company.
  • Sustainable Production. All of our herbal teas and supplements are produced in our LEED Platinum certified production facility in India, which is a marvel of top-tier sustainable design, construction and operations.

  • Respiratory Support. Andropgraphis is found to support healthy functioning of the upper respiratory tract by promoting normal, clear breathing and open airways.
  • Antioxidant Action. The powerful antioxidants in Andrographis can help protect the body against free radicals and support overall health. Studies have been performed that have shown its ability to help detox the liver, kidney, heart, lungs and spleen.
  • Digestive Health. The leaves of andrographis support gastrointestinal health and the roots have stomachic properties, which aid in healthy digestion. As a digestive bitter, this herb not only helps soothe the entire gastrointestinal tract, it helps the body absorb nutrients.
  • Healthy Gut. In conjunction with its digestive benefits, the plant supports the large and small intestines and promotes a healthy gut microbiome.
  • Organ Support. Andrographis is an ally to just about every organ in the body. It helps support heart health, liver health, gallbladder health and more. It works to support normal function of the organs and regulate healthy blood pressure, detoxification, hormone balance and healthy blood sugar levels.

Traditional Significance of Andrographis

Andrographis has been long used in traditional systems throughout the Indian subcontinent, China, Southeast Asia, Japan and Korea. In ancient Indian Ayurvedic medicine, the plant is known as mahatikta (Sanskrit); and in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) it’s known as chuan xin lian, which translates to thread the heart lotus. In TCM, andrographis is regarded as having bitter, cold properties that help remove excess heat and toxins from the body. In the Ayurvedic system, it’s a key herb in many herbal remedies for supporting liver health and detoxification.
