Now is time that we restore the true meaning and purpose to the concept presently known as “immunity.”
First things first: This is an article on immunity, so this will sound a bit counter-intuitive, but I do not really believe in “immunity” in the first place, or at least not in the way we have been led to believe for the last 130 years in this present profit-based pharmaceutical-dominated medical paradigm which, due to financial bottom lines generated by greed, tends to be mainly focused on generating money from disease and is much less focused on generating a wealth of personal and global wellness.
Terrain vs Germ Theory
About 130 years ago there was a big disagreement in the western scientific community regarding what causes imbalance and disease and thus what the basis of health is. There were two main schools of thought.
What is Your Measure of Success?
Success in Germ Theory is how much we can kill, control and be separate from
“other,” in other words, community is disease. Conversely, success in Terrain Theory is dependent on how well we can adapt, allow and be one with “other,” so community is Immunity. “Community” here being “other,” the fullness of the entire ecosystem.
Of course, money talks, and the money possible by pushing Germ Theory onto the unsuspecting masses is enormous, absolutely colossal, and much more aggressive than the money behind Terrain Theory. So of course Germ Theory “won,” at least until now that it has proven itself to be as inadequate as it is inaccurate and actually is one of the main causes of the deadliest diseases now. Adherence to Germ Theory is one reason why America spends more money on health care and yet is one of the sickest nations in the world.
Terrain theory, which was supported by wise though much less aggressive and profit-minded people, was basically forgotten to most, until recently when the entire health paradigm started to shift from Western medicine’s disease-centric view to the more traditional and sustainable wellness-centric views.
So Which is Right?
Truth be told, in my opinion and practice, both of the theories are correct, and have their place in rightness and wellness: in the context of wellness and prevention a good balance is 95% Terrain and 5% Germ, and in the context of disease and treatment that goes to 80% Terrain and 20% Germ.
Prashanti’s Concept of Adaptivity (Immunity)
My present clinical based concept of immunity is fourfold and I call it Adaptivity. It is based on four of the major facets and functions of the white blood cells and their partner molecules within cells, the cytokines and histamines: Heamatopoesis, Cytokine, Histamine and OptiMicrobial. There is a fifth facet emerging that is related to the ratio of albumin and globulin, but I will not include that yet.
First, Healthy Heamatopoesis Function
Heamo means “blood” and Poesis means “making.” So to me, heamatopeosis (sometimes spelled hematopoesis), the making of abundant, vivified, balanced and well differentiated blood is one of the most important facets in Immunity/Adaptivity. Why? Because basically all the major players of our “outer” immunity, like all the leucocytes including neutrophils, basophils, eosinophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, and macrophages are blood cells and are made by just one cell: Heamatopoetic progenitor cells, a type of potent stem cell that lives in our bone marrow. So if you can ensure really potent and powerful heamatopoetic progenitors, then you have a strong basis of Immunity/Adaptivity. Note this is especially important in a world full of Fukoshimas.
Herbs that support heamatopoetic progenitors include Turmeric, a classic blood builder, and also Tulsi-Holy Basil, Katuki, Pomegranate and Rehmannia. Chlorophyll in general has an affinity to support blood so adding “deep greens” like kale, collards, and wheatgrass supports Adaptivity in this way. Nettle and moringa leaves are two herbs that support healthy heamotopoesis both as blood building herbs and as deep greens. Other dietary facets that support healthy heamatopoesis are Himalayan sea salt and organic raw coconut water.
Healthy heamatopoesis is ensuring that your Adaptivity/Immunity is full and powerful!
Second, Healthy Cytokine Function
Cytokines are all the molecular immune system messengers often within the cell itself. A prime example of this is NF-kB, which is one of the most important molecules to keep controlled. Using the word “cytokines” is an FDA friendly way of saying supporting a healthy response to occasional inflammation. Inflammatory response is basically the immune system getting all excited and seriously activated, however, we have to make sure that it does not get overly excited and overly activated as then your innate protective warriors can switch sides, which is no fun.
Great herbs that support healthy cytokines include again, Turmeric, Ginger, Tulsi-Holy Basil, Katuki, Bhumyamalaki, all the Triphala super fruits, and Punarnava. Some of the best herbs to ensure healthy cytokine function in the brain, thus supporting cognitive functions like memory and focus, are the two Brahmi herbs, Centella and Bacopa, and Shankhpushpi.
Healthy cytokines ensure that your immunity is balanced and centered!
Third, Healthy Histamine Function
Histamines are a representative of a complex crew of molecules that tell the body that there is a dangerous molecule or creature in the body, usually a foreign protein. The problem is that man has now made so many weird foreign molecules and objects, including things like white bread, that our histamines often have a hard time figuring out what is what, and so ring the alarm bell all the time. This is especially true during seasons when the amount of pollen starts to rise, as pollens are incredibly intricate patterns of protein that can mesmerize and distract even the most astute observer.
Excellent herbs to support healthy histamine function are Turmeric, Tulsi-Holy Basil, Guduchi, and Nettle. Nettle, like Turmeric, is an incredible all a round herb.
Healthy histamine function ensures that your immunity is cogent and intelligent!
Fourth, Healthy Opti-MicrobialTM* Function
This fourth facet of Immunity in my model is all about actually keeping populations of microbes within the bodymind at healthy levels, including viruses, fungi, bacteria, etc. It is not about being “anti” anything, it is not about treating disease, but rather about being “optimal” everything, it is all about optimal wellness. If you keep the idea in your mind that you have to kill and create chasms in order to be healthy you soon will not be happy. But if you see that all things have their time and place, and many of those things simply need not concurrently occupy the time and place of your bodymind, then you are about skillfully adapting to your environment and you can live in peace with all beings.
Besides this, if you knew how microbes are absolutely imperative to our existence, not to mention our wellness, then you would very quickly want more “opti” in your life and less “anti” in your life.
Excellent herbs to support healthy opti-microbial function are Turmeric, Neem, Tulsi-Holy Basil, Katuki, Garlic, Elderberry, Dragon’s Blood, Schizandra, etc. Also, there are many great essential oils for this, however, we won’t get into their use here as it is not the scope of this newsletter.
Healthy Opti-MicrobialTM Function ensures that your Adaptivity/Immunity knows how to hold healthy and flexible boundaries!
Summary of Prashanti’s Model of Adaptivity (Immunity)
Of course, a great way to achieve all four levels is to consume your anti-stress herbal adaptogens, like Tulsi-Holy Basil, Katuki, Ashwagandha, Brahmi, etc.
And So the Pendulum Swings
Nature is our nature, and like nature our wellness always seeks balance. So for the last 100 years, a mere speck in our 200,000 years as humans on this good earth, we have become a bit off balance. However, now more and more people are seeing a wellness-based health system is far superior and far cheaper than a disease-centric health system. And so we must replace our hundred-year old assumptions, programs and concepts with older more tried-and-true traditional ones, for instance it is time to replace our concept of Immunity with that of Adaptivity.
Speaking of Immunity, Adaptivity and ORGANIC INDIA, the Immunity Formula, created by Dr Narendra Singh, recently won the award for the “Best New Supplement” in the entire natural products industry. It is based on Kutki and Tulsi, two extraordinary adaptogenic herbs that support both immunity and adaptivity.
One last thing: know that keeping a kind, loving, fearless heart is one of the all-time best ways to ensure healthy immunity and adaptivity.
This article is dedicated to my mentor, friend and ally: The kind lion-hearted Dr Narendra Singh!
Thank You and Fare Thee Well!
