In this newsletter we will discuss the herbs and therapies that help support the tissues and functions involved in the array of negative effects that GMOs have on our health.
This negative impact that GMOs have on our health can be experienced immediately or it can start slow, barely noticeable for several years, and then grow into a pervasive and debilitating condition. If you have been feeling a general malaise growing over the last decade and especially the last few years, and have not been consuming an organic diet, then it is very possible that are you are experiencing the internal tissue and organ damage caused by GMOs, genetically modified organisms, that are found in our diets, our water and in our air.
In order to more efficiently control our global food sources, Big Agro businesses create GMOs by inserting the DNA from one organism into another, thereby creating a genetically unique life form that is totally alien to our planet. Unfortunately this is not a benign life form but one that is quite aggressively malevolent, as its creators know.
For the last decade the horrific damage that GMO crops are inflicting on farms, animals and the ecosystems around the world has become well-known and relatively common knowledge as the distress of farmers around the world hit mainstream media. One of the most tragic examples of the disastrous catastrophes that GMOs support is the farmer suicide rate in India, where, due to the devastation that the GMOs and associated pesticides have wrought upon their land, animals, family, and finances, every 30 minutes a farmer commits suicide to be released from their deeply agonizing despair.
In the last decade and especially in the last few years scientists around the world are flooding the peer-reviewed international scientific journals with proof of how GMOs are also responsible for dozens of deep imbalances in practically any organism that comes in contact with them, including humans and their unborn fetuses. It is estimated that GMOs are in 80% of the processed foods in America, so though it is possible to reduce them by eating a certified organic diet, but because they are so insidiously pervasive and unlabelled in our food, hidden in ingredients like corn syrup and even flowing in our water and floating in our air, they find their way into most humans, including fetuses.
One of the big problems with GMOs, besides the fact that they tend to not work in the first place (which causes extensive crop failures) is that the genetic modifications that they impart are not stable and can cause native genes to mutate in a variety of ways that border on the macabre with genes getting twisted, fragmented, mixed, inverted, turned off or on permanently. Integrity in fundamental genetic sequences is absolutely key to all beings. And if the DNA tampered with is not bad enough, these genetic changes also can likely effect the beneficial flora within our digestive track and mutate them, causing them to be programmed to do who knows what!
A massive body of literature has arisen out of independent scientific tests, studies and research on the effects that GMOs have on animals, including humans. The list of the well documented harm that GMOs inflict on us, including on the fetuses in the wombs of our women, is quite large at over 65 different health risks. To learn more about these I recommend reading the book Genetic Roulette by Jeffrey Smith as it has all the latest research very well organized and accessible.
One of the basic mechanisms of how the GMOs damage us is exactly the same way they kill the creatures that they are designed to eliminate:
Catastrophic degeneration of tissues and function throughout the body typically starting with the digestive tract.
Depending on the individual and the particular GMO product, yes, Bt Corn poisons you via different mechanisms than Roundup Ready soy, this mechanism manifests in many different ways:
The “GMO Effect” is one name that is given to the pattern of systemic damage that is emerging, one of digestive and organ tissue degeneration leading first to a deep and almost mysterious malaise, moving toward mental and digestive dysfunction, and ending up with serious health concerns or worse.
The best thing is to avoid GMOs totally, and to support the tissue that may have been injured so in this newsletter we will address:
Western science has confirmed that herbs are very potent supporters of antioxidant function and that this is one of the main ways that they support many functions in the body, from detoxing to supporting healthy genetic function. The strong pungents like Tulsi-Holy Basil, Turmeric, Amapachak (found in the Complete Flexibility formula), the strong bitters like Neem, Kutki (in Immunity and Liver Kidney Formula) and the strong astringents like Triphala and Arjuna tend to have the strongest support of antioxidant function. Thus these herbs will tend to support genetic function. Turmeric is especially great at helping support healthy DNA because it has a very protective action on the telemeres, the tiny protein at the end of a chromosome that makes sure the chromosome stays intact and healthy
The stomach is basically composed of two facets, the protective facet that includes mucus and secretions, and then the aggressive facet which is the acids and digestive enzymes. Amalaki and Moringa are two great herbs to support the stomach because they help to balance both of these facets, the protective and the aggressive, into a stable functionality.
The champion by far here is Triphala, used by billions of people for several thousands of years to support a healthy colon, liver, stomach, pancreas and so much more. Triphala is a very balanced formula and so people of any age can consume it and of any constitution. It is the most used formula in the world for a good reason, actually about 40-50 good reasons.
Organic Psyllium is also very good here for many reasons, not the least of which our intestinal flora can make butyrate out of Psyllium. Where most cells in the body live on glucose, the cells of the colon live on butyrate and require it to function. Many colon problems arise simple because of inadequate butyrate. Psyllium helps to promote a healthy colon.
For agitated colons one can use Triphala with the herbs Bael and Chandrasoor in the context of the Bowelcare Formula. This formula is a warming soothing nourishing demulcent that is great medicine to calm an agitated digestive tract.
The champion herb for the liver is Kutki, also known as Katuki. It is renowned as a strong hepatoprotective herb, meaning it protects the liver, it supports deep reorganization of the liver, and it supports all the endogenous antioxidants in the liver to be synthesized in optimal amounts.
The herb Punarnava literally means “re-birth” in Sanskrit because it is so great at restoring and rebuilding kidney function and structure. It is also one of the very best herbs to support a healthy response to occasional inflammation. Both of these herbs are in the Liver Kidney Formula.
Western science has shown that Turmeric has many mechanisms to support brain function, including supporting synapses to be congestion-free. The cognitive adaptogens also work here, especially Brahmi (both Centella and Bacopa) and Shankhapushpi.
In Ayurveda and Yoga the first reach herb for “all-things-chest” is without doubt Tulsi. There are 4000 herbs used in Ayurveda and to be the first reach herb means a lot.
Pushkarmool has many mechanisms to support the lungs and has been used for millennia for this. Pushkarmool is central to the Breathe Free formula.
The two herbs that we have mentioned in regards to the stomach, Amalaki and Moringa, are great at ensuring that there is neither too much or too little digestive enzymes in our stomach and colon. Besides these two one of the best formulas to support healthy digestive enzymes is Trikatu as it excels at releasing optimal amounts of all the pancreatic digestive enzymes, including lipase, amylase and several forms of protease.
Bimbi is an herb that is commonly used by in India by millions of people daily to control blood sugar levels. With the other herbs in the Sugar Balance formula it has many mechanisms to support this including supporting the production of insulin and helping to reduce the cellular resistance to insulin.
Another excellent herb for this is Arjuna, one of the best herbs for the heart. One of the 30 documented mechanisms that Arjuna supports heart health is by helping to restore healthy levels of blood sugar. Arjuna is the main herb in the Heart Guard Formula.
There is a cell in your bone marrow that is responsible for generating all the blood cells in your body, both red and white, including all the dozens of cells of your immunity. They are called the hematopoetic progenitor cells, and are very much a stem cell of sorts. Of course, protecting and supporting this is one of the ways that an herb can get the reputation as a blood builder. Turmeric and Tulsi-Holy Basil are confirmed by western science to support these progenitor cells.
The strong earth element adaptogenic roots tend to be the best when it comes to supporting reproductive health. Of these Shatavri and Ashagandha are champions and first reach herbs for many people. They also are great when used together. The Vitality Formula supports reproductive function as well.
Jeffrey Smith writes: “On May 19th, the American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) called on physicians to educate their patients, the medical community, and the public to avoid GM (genetically modified) foods when possible and provide educational materials concerning GM foods and health risks.” They called for a moratorium on GM foods, long-term independent studies, and labeling. They conclude, "There is more than a casual association between GM foods and adverse health effects. There is causation," as defined by recognized scientific criteria.
Again, it is best to avoid GMOs but how can we do that if they are not labeled? So we have to support the labeling of GMOs and eat only certified organic foods. It really makes a difference to our health and the health of the entire ecosystem. And in the meantime, to support your body to protect itself as much as possible from these insidious alien life forms created by corporations wanting to totally control all of our food, use your wonderful healing herbal allies daily.
