Herbs for the zodiac with crystals and star chart on a soft pick table.

Astrology aficionados and herbal practitioners: Did you know there is an intimate connection between plants and the stars? In both eastern and western tradition, there is anecdotal evidence amassed over centuries that shows the influence of celestial bodies on earth’s flora. This interplay of planetary positioning and terrestrial activities has long been observed to have a remarkable correlation to human wellness, as well.

So intertwined were stars, plants and human health that up until 1660, physicians had to pass astrological exams to get their medical license. It was common knowledge that has been majorly swept from modern medicine – save for some integrative, holistic and home practitioners who honor this age-old wisdom. Read on to learn all about herbs for the zodiac and how you can optimize your herbal wellness routine according to your sign.

CONTENTS

What is the zodiac?

The zodiac is a belt shaped region along the celestial equator of the sky. It consists of 12 constellations that are used in astrology. These zodiacs, also referred to as ‘signs,’ are positioned in 12 different 30-degree sectors within the earth’s 360-degree orbit around the sun. Each sector is correlated with specific dates of the year. As the earth makes its journey around the sun, it makes its journeys through the zodiac, as well.

The date a person is born determines what zodiac sign they are. With star charts, one can determine their sun, rising and moon sign, in addition to where each of the planets were positioned at their time of birth — or other important life events. The zodiac is regarded as a study and divination system that relates human and earthly activities to the position of celestial objects.

What is herbalism?

Herbalism is a time-honored practice of utilizing plants to support wellness. Roots, rhizomes, stems, leaves and flowers have been used for human health for thousands of years, and can help promote everything from digestive health and immunity to cognitive wellness and stress relief.

Today, between 50,000-80,000 plants are used worldwide for their health value. In fact, about 25 percent of all medicine used across the globe is derived from plants. There are many ways a plant can be prepared for use by herbalists and naturopaths, whether whole herb capsules, whole herb powders, bioactive extracts, infusions, concoctions, tinctures, salves, poultices and more.

What is herbal astrology?

Herbal astrology, also known as astroherbalism, is a discipline that connects herbs and stars to an individual’s zodiac sign. Herbal astrologers use astrology to determine the appropriate herbs for the zodiac and a person’s overall star chart. Herbal astrology is different from ancient medical astrology, which doesn’t necessarily have to include herbalism, but rather observes the effect of the moon, planet and constellations on the human body and treatment response. The practice of astroherbalism helps leverage mind, body, spirit wellness by observing both star and plant influences on the human body for personalized, holistic wellness.

Given people’s general disconnect from star gazing and herbal healing – both of which were so commonplace in our collective history – the practice of herbal astrology helps reconnect modern wellness seekers to these ancient healing modalities and find the ideal herbs for the zodiac. By reforging this connection, people can come into greater harmony and awareness with the forces that influence their earthly experience. Not only can this help support one’s physical wellness, but it can also help provide the framework to live a more fulfilled and complete life.
