Sugar-Free caramel sauce with chai tea, dates, and apple slicer.

Thinking about ditching refined sugar? Nature’s bounty provides all you need to satisfy a sweet tooth in the form of whole foods, with vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and other healing properties that allow for a little indulgence that’s better for your body and digestion. For proof, look no further than this delectable Date-Based Sugar-Free Caramel sauce.

Combined with creamy coconut milk, nutritious, plump, and chewy Medjool dates blend into a natural caramel so rich and smooth you’ll never eye the sugary butter original again. Better yet, while dates are a concentrated source of natural sugar, and therefore should be consumed in moderation, they’re considered lower glycemic than refined sugars. Plus, they’re brimming with fiber, antioxidants, and vitamins and minerals such as magnesium, potassium, iron, and calcium.

For a delightful twist of extra warm spiciness, we like to infuse our ORGANIC INDIA Tulsi Masala Chai tea into the mix. But if you’d prefer a more classic caramel, feel free to keep it even simpler, foregoing the tea and spices. You can also add a little tahini or nut butter for an extra creamy protein boost if desired.

Non-Dairy Refined Sugar-Free Caramel Sauce

Makes approximately 2 Cups

Try it on a sugar-free yogurt parfait!

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ Cups Medjool dates (approximately 12-16), pits removed
  • 1 13.5 fluid ounce can coconut milk, full fat or lite
  • 2 ORGANIC INDIA Tulsi Masala Chai tea bags (optional)
  • ½ Teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ Teaspoon ORGANIC INDIA Ceylon Cinnamon (optional)
  • ⅛ Teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ⅛ Teaspoon ground cardamom
  • Pinch of sea salt to taste
  • *⅓ Cup tahini or creamy nut butter (optional)

Method:

  1. In a small saucepan, warm the coconut milk with the ORGANIC INDIA Tulsi Chai Masala tea bags and dates. Bring to a near boil, then let simmer, stirring occasionally, for a few minutes. Turn off heat and cover to allow tea bags to steep, at least 20 minutes.
  2. Remove the tea bags, and transfer milk mixture to a blender. Add spices and blend until smooth. Adjust seasonings if desired. Enjoy immediately while warm, or refrigerate in a sealed container until ready to use. Store in the fridge for up to one week.
