Neem: The Village Dispensary
Neem is an evergreen tree in the mahogany family, and has been known and used in Ayurveda for 4,000 years. The Sanskrit name of the neem tree is “Arishtha,” meaning “reliever of sickness.’ In India, the tree is believed to be of divine origin, and is also called “the village dispensary” in India because every part of the plant is believed to have therapeutic value.
Neem Body and Mind Benefits
Modern science has confirmed Neem’s anti-inflammatory properties, as well as antifungal and antibacterial action. Research has also identified Neem’s antioxidant characteristics, and in Ayurveda, the herb is used to balance pitta and kapha doshas.
Neem is cooling, light and dry, and may support healthy liver function by alleviating liver heat and dampness. Its cooling effect on the body is believed to reduce inflammation and has been used as an acne treatment. In Ayurveda, it is used to clear “Ama,” or toxins from the body. Neem pastes and oils have traditionally been used to calm skin inflammation and treat rashes and insect bites.
