Gratitude is such a powerful place to live from – it colors our daily lives for us and those around us, as well as for humanity and the planet. The ripples of gratitude can be felt throughout our collective community in ways beyond words. As we move into the traditional season to express gratitude for our harvests and for our community, we invite you to add this profound practice to your ways of expressing gratitude.

You will be pleasantly surprised in the support this practice, A Gratitude Journey Through the Chakras, offers us in being the change you wish to see. The chakras, which are energy centers in our bodies, support our growth on all levels of our being, from the physical level, through the emotions and thoughts, and through the patterns that we hold in our bodies. Similar to our state of gratitude that opens our world to us in a unique way, when the chakras are in alignment and in harmony, our lives reflect this state of well-being.

The Practice

Begin by finding a comfortable position, either sitting upright or laying down on your back. Take a few deep breaths from your heart center, in the middle of your chest, in order to settle in. Find yourself resting between your past and future, just in this moment.

Root Chakra - Muladhara

Once you feel centered, bring your attention to the root chakra, located at the base of your torso. This chakra faces down towards the earth when we are standing. Inhale up into it, right through the skin, filling it with fresh life force. Let that life force settle in and spread out to fill the chakra as you exhale. After a few breaths, begin to breathe in the color red as well, letting this color fill the space, cleansing any stagnation. See the color shining out of the chakra. Next, breathe in the feeling of security and connection, feeling grounded and safe. Breathe out gratitude for having these qualities in your life. If you struggle with this, allow the barriers to feeling these qualities dissolve, as you continue to breathe. Now, as you continue, inhale the attributes and exhale the feeling of gratitude out into the world. After some time with this, notice how you feel.

Sacral Chakra - Svadhisthana

Next, move your attention to the sacral chakra, located at the lower abdomen. Breathe in through the skin, filling this space with healing life force, letting it settle in and spread throughout the chakra on the exhale. Now, begin to draw in the color orange, letting this color clear any blockages. See the color shining out from the chakra.
Next, begin to breathe in the feeling of intimacy, connection with others, and sensuality. Breathe out gratitude for these qualities. As you do this, notice how this feels in your body.

Solar Plexus Chakra - Manipura

Next, bring your attention to the third chakra, the solar plexus, located at the mid-abdomen. Breathe in through the skin, filling this space with light, letting it settle in and fill the chakra as you breathe out. Next, begin to draw in the color yellow, letting this color clear any blockages. See the color shining out from the chakra. Now, begin to breathe in the feeling of centeredness, will power and strength. Breathe out gratitude for these qualities. Notice how the chakra responds to this process.

Heart Chakra – Anahata

Next, move up to the fourth chakra, Anahata, located in the middle of the chest. Breathe in through the skin, filling this space with fresh energy, letting it settle in and spread throughout the chakra as you exhale. Next, begin to draw in the color green, letting this color clear any stagnation that is present. See the color shining out from the chakra. Now, begin to breathe in the feeling of compassion, self-love and open-heartedness. Breathe out gratitude for these qualities. Notice how the heart chakra feels as you do this.

Throat Chakra - Vishudha

Next, move your attention to the fifth chakra, at the base of the throat. Breathe in through the skin, filling this space with prana, letting it settle in and spread throughout the chakra on the exhale. Now, begin to draw in the color sky blue, letting this color clear any stagnation that is there. See the color shining out from the chakra. Now, begin to breathe in the feeling of creativity, self-expression, and speaking your truth. Breathe out gratitude for these qualities. Notice how the chakra responds to this focus.

Third Eye Chakra -Ajna

Next, move up to the sixth chakra, the third eye, located at the forehead. Breathe in through the skin, filling this space with healing energy, and breathe out, letting the energy settle in and spread throughout the chakra. Now, begin to draw in the color indigo, letting this color clear any stagnation that’s there. See the color shining out from the chakra. Now, begin to breathe in the feeling of intuition, inner wisdom and trust. Breathe out gratitude for these qualities. Notice how the chakra feels as you breathe and focus here.

Crown Chakra - Sahasrara

Finally, bring your attention to the seventh chakra, the crown, located at the top of the head. Breathe in through the skin, filling this space with prana, letting it settle in and spread throughout the chakra on the exhale. Next, begin to draw in the color violet, letting this color fill the entire chakra. See the color shining out from the crown. Now, begin to breathe in the feeling of oneness, tuning into the part of you that is eternal and beyond your name, body and life story. Breathe out gratitude for these qualities. Notice how the chakra opens to these qualities as you breathe here.

Lastly, inhale from the crown, and breathe down, just in front of your spine, to the root chakra, at the base of your torso. Breathe up again to the crown, and down to the root, feeling the connection of all the chakras as you pass through them. See all the colors shining out from your body and feel the quality of the attributes that you’ve cultivated during this practice. Notice how your breathwork has shifted your awareness and increased the level of gratitude that you feel. Simply allow this feeling to flow out from you, to the people you engage with and into the world. When you feel complete, open your eyes and greet your outside world.
