Perhaps Norman Vincent Peale said it best: “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.” To us here at ORGANIC INDIA, that is what being a Certified B Corporation is all about – aiming high, knowing that even if we don’t achieve perfection, we’re making a real, positive impact along the way. From our inception, we have sought a better way to do business and create a positive impact on our workers, our communities and our planet. We operate every day with our values leading the way.
Best for The World
On June 12, ORGANIC INDIA was officially recognized as a Best for the World Overall. Having earned an Overall Impact Score in the top 10 percent of more than 2400 Certified B Corporations, we are honored to be in the company of other leading brands like Dr. Bronner’s and Patagonia.
B Corporations are to business what Fair Trade certification is to coffee or USDA Organic certification is to milk. It’s independent verification of people using business as a force for good, and measures social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency. To become a Certified B Corporation, companies must undergo a comprehensive assessment that evaluates a company’s environmental performance, employee relationships, diversity, involvement in the local community, the impact a company’s product or service has on those it serves, and more.
CSR from Inception
According to Kyle Garner, CEO of ORGANIC INDIA, “we originally pursued becoming a certified B Corp as a way to codify for ourselves the mission that this company has had from the very beginning. Before anybody here knew what a B Corp was, or before anybody was talking about Corporate Social Responsibility, ORGANIC INDIA was living it from the day it was founded.”
Because our business is on a mission to put in more than we take out, our sustainability commitments revolve around regeneration – of the land, communities and the environment. One of the ways we strive to achieve this is through regenerative agriculture – an approach to farming that improves water cycles, enhances biodiversity and builds healthy soil through techniques like composting, crop rotation and cover cropping. Such practices go beyond organic, resulting in carbon sequestration and the replenishment of soil and ecosystems.
Our commitment to regenerative agriculture informs how we engage with and empower small family farmers and is interwoven with our commitment to regenerate communities through social programming, access to clean water, health care and job skill trainings that empower and support some of India’s most vulnerable populations: women, widows, the elderly, and the illiterate.
Interconnected Employee Culture
We know that positive impact starts within, and we include our employees in our mission through ongoing office wellness programs, generous retirement plan options and greater than average paid time off. To help improve the environment both locally and globally, we also procure renewable energy, minimize our carbon footprint with telecommuting, made commitments to energy reduction and most recently, installed an electric vehicle charging station.
We are grateful to be recognized for our efforts toward doing better business and would like to congratulate all the other companies with whom we share this honor.
