Five Ways to Detox with Food

The word ‘cleanse’ can be a bit intimidating, especially in the winter when we want to hibernate and raid the fridge, committing to a cleanse can sound like we are depriving ourselves of goodness. However, there are plenty of natural ways to detox the body without sacrificing nutrients. Here are five of my favorite detoxing foods to help you flush your body of harmful toxins, while simultaneously powering your system with a bright boost of energy:

Beets:

This beautiful, brightly colored root vegetable is packed with amazing antioxidant and detoxification benefits. They have been linked to promoting healing in the liver and gallbladder, two organs essential to have working properly when undergoing a detoxification process. The betain in beets acts to defend the liver and bile ducts which are important for helping the liver function properly. Beets have also been shown to aid in the prevention of free radicals which can have a damaging affect throughout our body. Try juicing beets for a booster-shot of nutrients. You can also lightly steam them and top them on your favorite salad.


Psyllium:

By now, you have probably heard about the amazing benefits of psyllium. It comes from the seeds of a plant called Plantago ovata. Psyllium is rich in both soluble and insoluble fiber, making it an incredible food to promote healthy digestion and regular elimination. When adding psyllium to your detox program or diet, it is important to drink plenty of water during the day. Chia Seeds:

I’m not recommending that you start eating the weeds out of your garden but store-bought, organic dandelion greens are very beneficial in aiding with the detoxification process. Known for their strong and bitter taste, dandelion greens help stimulate the secretion of bile acid for fat emulsification. This enables fat-soluble toxins to leave your body! How do you incorporate dandelion greens into your diet? Simple! Replace regular lettuce in your salads with these bitter leafy greens. Add some olive oil, apple cider vinegar, and lemon juice to tone down their strong taste and give your salad some extra nutrients.

Lemons:

Not only are lemons a delicious addition to just about any dish, they are packed with properties to aid in the detoxification process! Lemon juice has been shown to help increase the production of bile while balancing out the pH levels in your body. Most people assume that lemons are very acidic when they actually have strong alkalizing properties. Lemon juice is also wonderful for strengthening the immune system and promoting fresh breath. Try squeezing some organic lemon juice into your morning glass of water for a nutrient-dense pick-me-up!
