Travel Better: Fiber Tricks

Whether it’s for adventure or relaxation, traveling is one of life’s greatest pleasures. For many of us that live a healthy lifestyle or prefer to follow a specific natural food diet, the idea of traveling can also be stressful. As a natural foods chef myself, I sometimes become a little anxious before a big trip, usually about preparation in regard to my diet, along with vitamins and supplements.

Will I have all the healthy foods and snacks I need on my trip?
Will I remember to pack everything?
Will the hotel be able to provide me with the healthy items I prefer?

Over the past few years, I have traveled with a natural fiber supplement. I consume whole husk, organic psyllium or flax seed every day when I’m home, so I always travel with some to keep a few items in my diet consistent. If I had to choose my favorite, psyllium would be the winner.

What is Psyllium?

Psyllium is the seed husk of the herb Plantago ovata. It is a natural source of soluble and insoluble fiber, which makes it so iconic for healthy digestion, elimination, and heart health. I started using psyllium for the health benefits, but was surprised to find I enjoyed the subtle flavor (a bit nutty).

Psyllium expands when mixed with liquid, so it is the ideal intestinal cleanser as it makes you feel full. Most of us don’t get even half the amount of recommended daily fiber intake, which can often lead to the feeling of being constantly hungry.

Why the fiber hype?

Fiber is crucial in a healthy diet! We need fiber to promote a healthy gastrointestinal system, regularity, elimination, heart health and a balanced weight. Because fiber products are used to cleanse and aid in so many vital bodily functions, it is so important to find a natural, organic source. I recommend ORGANIC INDIA's Whole Husk Psyllium. It's organic, Non-GMO, and contains solely 1 ingredient; psyllium.

How much should I consume, and how?

Aside from eating fibrous foods like certain vegetables, fruits and whole grains, you can supplement with all natural fiber. Did you know that most adults require 32 grams of fiber a day to maintain a healthy digestive system? That’s a lot!

Maintaining the recommended amount can be difficult, especially while on the go: that’s why I prefer to travel with a convenient natural fiber supplement; ORGANIC INDIA’s Whole Husk Psyllium Lift packets.
I found traveling with a bag of psyllium or flax seed gets messy, and I often don’t have room in my purse to carry the bulky bag around. As a chef and fellow ‘healthy foodie’ I have found these organic psyllium packets to be most convenient!

The best part? These lifts contain perfect individual single-serving packets of natural, bulk-forming fiber. They can fit it in my jacket, back pocket or handbag. It is so easy to take with me to a restaurant when I’m eating out (and more subtle when I sprinkle on top of my food!)

Tips to take with you

Remember, when choosing a fiber product, be sure to you buy one that is all natural, and organic. Not all fiber products are made from real food. Take time to read the ingredients label, your gut will thank you!
In addition, know that conventional psyllium husk products are often grown on conventional, industrialized farms and sprayed with pesticides, herbicides, chemical fertilizers or a post-harvest chemical treatment.

Be sure to look for organic, certified options like ORGANIC INDIA.

10 ways to get your daily fiber intake while traveling with ORGANIC INDIA’s Psyllium Lift:

1. Sprinkle on your breakfast cereal. Add to oatmeal, granola, or your favorite breakfast cereal. This is by far the most popular way to enjoy added fiber in a meal. Psyllium blends into breakfast grains perfectly and adds a nice nutty flavor. Dried fruit and nuts on top adds a nice touch and flavor punch!
2. Over berried or mixed fruit. This is my favorite way to enjoy psyllium. I even love it on half of a papaya. Try mixing it into a mashed banana, then enjoying on toast for a more filling breakfast. Another tasty fruit option is psyllium over a sliced apple with almond butter; a more nourishing snack.
3. Add to a smoothie. When stopping into a juice and smoothie shop, ask if they will add your package of Psyllium Lift into your custom smoothie. From my experience, they always politely oblige. When making your own smoothie at home you can easily stir in the psyllium in as the smoothie mixes!
4. Mix into rice and grains. Another easy way to add more fiber to your travel diet is to mix Psyllium Lift in with rice. This works well with brown rice, fried rice, or any grains you have at dinner or lunch. Add a little olive oil and salt, mix well and enjoy.
5. On salad. Salads at restaurants are often void of filling fibrous vegetables. These types of veggies are a great way to make a meal more filling and satisfying, so you can swiftly get through the rest of your day. Be sure to sprinkle the psyllium on after you’ve added your dressing to the salad, so it more easily sticks to your greens.
6. Over avocado toast. Just sprinkle psyllium on top like a garnish and enjoy! A whole avocado has 10 grams of fiber. This super boost of combining fiber rich avocado with psyllium will leave you full and energized all morning.
7. In soups or stews. The convenience of the single serving Psyllium Lift packets makes it easy to add fiber into your soup, stew or chili. It blends so well, you won’t even know it’s there.
8 Add to yogurt or parfaits. Just open your single serving bag of Psyllium Lift and stir into your yogurt or enjoy sprinkled on your parfait.
9. Mix into nut butters. Sometimes when I travel I’ll take a small jar of almond butter with me, or pick one up at a natural foods store near wherever I am staying. I like adding psyllium in the nut butter and enjoying it by dipping in celery sticks or apples.
10. Mix with water. This is the easiest way to make sure your getting at least 4 grams of fiber a day. I like to use a small jar and fill it with six ounces of water. Add one packet of Psyllium Lift, mix well and drink. You can enjoy this morning or night.

If you consume a lot of psyllium and want to minimize waste at home, ORGANIC INDIA's Whole Husk Psyllium is also available in a bulk canister!
