A Brief History

In the 1990s the ORGANIC INDIA founders witnessed wide-spread devastation caused by attempts to industrialize India’s agriculture with chemical pesticides, fertilizers, and genetically engineered seeds.

At the same time they learned about the health supporting characteristics of Holy Basil, also known as Tulsi.

They shared a deep wish to bring these health-supporting herbs to the world by partnering with farmers to:
- Recover traditional agricultural wisdom
- Begin the environmental regeneration of thousands of acres of farmland and forest
- Establish a new business model based on responsible economic, social, and environmental principles and fair trade-based farmer partnerships

Working with Ayurvedic and Western physicians, they learned of herbs and formulas that support a healthy response to environmental and physical stress.

Our Facility
In May 2021, ORGANIC INDIA’s Lucknow factory was awarded an Honorable Mention in the Fast Company 2021 World Changing Ideas for India’s first LEED Platinum certified food production facility. LEED is the acronym for “Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design,” and was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) to promote and encourage the design and construction of energy and resource efficient buildings optimized for human health. The LEED Platinum certification stands as evidence of the company’s commitment to the welfare of its community, the environment, employees and farmer partners.
Our Board of Directors
Subrata Dutta
Mr. Subrata Dutta is the Group Managing Director of ORGANIC INDIA, a leading manufacturer and exporter of organic teas, infusions, herbal supplements and food.
Over the course of his career, Mr. Dutta has held various senior positions with top global brands across diverse sectors of FMCG, Retail, Lifestyle and Travel in companies such as PEPSICO, Wimco, Himalaya, and Samsonite.
He has been instrumental in steering the companies he has worked with through transformational and path-breaking initiatives, he is known as a “turnaround specialist” in the industry.
Mr. Dutta started his career with CESC Limited in 1986 and Lakme (Unilever) in 1990 after completing his Masters’ degree from IIM Bangalore.
Prior to joining ORGANIC INDIA, Mr. Dutta’s most recent assignments include President Asia Pacific at Samsonite Asia at Hong Kong, Managing Director at Samsonite India and Chief Executive Officer at Fabindia Overseas Pvt Ltd.
Richard Celeste
Richard (Dick) Celeste has an unusual career trajectory. Following his education at Yale and Oxford, he worked at the Peace Corps headquarters; as Personal Assistant to the US Ambassador in India; in real estate development; served as a state legislator in Ohio and as Lt. Governor. After a stint as Director of the Peace Corps, Celeste was elected to two terms as Governor of Ohio. Celeste then headed a small economic development consultancy until 1997, when he returned to India as US Ambassador. From 1990 until his departure for India, Celeste also chaired the Government-University-Industry Research Roundtable at the National Academy of Sciences. In 2002 he become the 12th President of Colorado College, where he served for nine years. He has been and is a member or chair of a number of corporate and not for profit boards. He and his wife Jacqueline have a son, Sam, who is 23, and he has six grown children from a previous marriage.
Laurent Chappuis
Born and raised in Geneva, Switzerland, Laurent earned a Bachelor in Finance in 1990 from the University of Geneva graduating first of his class before starting his professional career in Wealth Management in Geneva at Pictet, Switzerland’s largest Private Bankers. After stints in Tokyo and Bahrain, he became one of three members of the bank’s Wealth Management Investment Committee before setting up his own investment management company in Geneva in 2004 until 2017 when he founded his consulting company based in the United Arab Emirates. He is a board member of Organic India Private Limited in India, Organic India USA and Clean in the USA, Peninsula and Metung Hot Springs in Australia and Maruia Hot Springs in New Zealand. An avid sports fan, Laurent enjoys cycling, alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, mountain biking and core training as well as yoga. His hobbies include cooking, walks on the beach and in the mountains and traveling the world.
Dipali Patwa
Dipali Patwa is the Chief of Brand and Community at Fabindia. She is a social entrepreneur that has worked on both sides of the globe with an extensive history in digital and omni channel platforms working with consumer brands in the field of fashion, home furnishings and personal care. She is quick to adapt and learn in the ever-changing landscape of digital with a customer-centric, data-driven approach to meaningfully create brand community and adopt a 360 degree integrated marketing and design approach.
She started her career as the first Creative Director of Fabindia 20 years ago, where she began to understand the grassroot artisanal approach along with building communities sustainably. She has travelled extensively in India to work with various crafts sectors and artisan groups. She is currently also on the Board of Directors of Organic India US which is the sister brand of Fabindia focussed on Health and Wellness.
