Crocus sativus, called “Kesar” and “Kumkuma” in India, has often been called “red gold.” Saffron is the most expensive herb in the world, cultivated in Iran, India, Spain, Greece, and Turkey. Only the dried stigma of the plant is used — it takes about 36,000 flowers to collect one pound of the herb. It is also a beloved culinary spice, giving its rich yellow color to dishes like saffron rice and Spanish paella.
In Ayurvedic medicine, saffron has been used to support healthy stomach and GI tract function as well as optimize the inflammation response. It is considered a “cooling” tonic for the brain, thus supporting cognitive health. Ancient healers also recommended mixing saffron into a paste to support skin health.
