Crocus sativus, called “Kesar” and “Kumkuma” in India, has often been called “red gold.” Saffron is the most expensive herb in the world, cultivated in Iran, India, Spain, Greece, and Turkey. Only the dried stigma of the plant is used — it takes about 36,000 flowers to collect one pound of the herb. It is also a beloved culinary spice, giving its rich yellow color to dishes like saffron rice and Spanish paella.
In Ayurvedic medicine, saffron has been used to support healthy stomach and GI tract function as well as optimize the inflammation response. It is considered a “cooling” tonic for the brain, thus supporting cognitive health. Ancient healers also recommended mixing saffron into a paste to support skin health. Mixed with ghee, saffron was recommended for memory support in ancient Vedic texts.
Saffron Body and Mind Benefits
Rich in phytonutrients such as flavonoids and carotenoids, saffron has a significant free-radical scavenging action that helps protect nerves and tissue from oxidative stress. Along with B vitamins, these naturally-occurring plant chemicals support healthy serotonin levels, promoting a balanced mood and cognitive function. According to one study, “The efficacy of C. sativus in the treatment of mild to moderate depression was reported in clinical trials.”* Saffron is seen as a “tridoshic” herb, meaning it acts to balance all three of the doshas. It has also been used to support reproductive health in men and women. An extract of the plant may also reduce false hunger and food cravings, according to another study.
