Cooking with Tea

Did you know you can infuse tea into your meals? I love finding different ways to use tea in cooking, it's a culinary technique that has been used for thousands of years. Not only does tea have numerous health benefits, but it can also add an abundance of flavor to any dish!

More than just a beverage

I’ve been experimenting with ORGANIC INDIA's Tulsi Teas as of late! Tulsi (also known as holy basil) is a different variety than the classic culinary basil commonly used in making pesto or Italian dishes. Though different aromas and flavors, holy basil definitely adds a punch! The fresh herb evokes an earthy, vibrant flavor.

How? Tulsi Tea can be brewed and the infused liquid can be added to sauces, marinades, stews, soups, you name it! You can also use fresh holy-basil leaves as a garnish!

I do not personally have a Tulsi bush growing in my backyard (yet), so using the tea is the next best thing! In this case, I called on ORGANIC INDIA's Tulsi Turmeric Ginger when poaching my fish. The Turmeric adds a pungent, bitter flavor with hints of orange and ginger. Ginger adds an earthy warming spice and hint of citrus. The two together are perfect complements!

This Turmeric-Ginger salmon pairs well with all varieties of rice. I especially like pairing this dish with black rice, sautéed green beans and carrots. This tea-infusion-technique works well with any fish, or with cruciferous vegetables (like broccoli or cauliflower).

Meal prep tip: The salmon can be poached, cooled and refrigerated in an airtight container for up to two days.

You will need:



  1. Take your salmon out of the fridge, and set aside on a plate.
  2. Boil 4 cups of water in a 1 quart pan. Once the water reaches a boil, turn off the stove. Add your 4-8 Tulsi Turmeric Ginger tea bags to the pot, and let brew 5-10 minutes.
  3. Range of tea bags depends on how strong you want the flavor, I personally go for 6 tea bags.
  4. Bring water back to a simmer and add fish. Let cook in a soft simmer for 5 minutes.
  5. Remove with a fish spatula or tongs. Repeat steps using same water if preparing more than one piece of fish.
  6. Add your favorite seasonings to taste. Try a sprinkle of Organic Turmeric Powder to enhance the turmeric flavor!
